The
supervision of the building of a new boat tends to be a bespoke service and
can range from regular weekly inspections with or without the purchaser or
commissioner present to a one off pre-delivery survey. Some clients choose
to receive progress updates from us especially when they are based overseas.
It
often reduces the chances of conflict if a surveyor is involved from as
early in the build as is possible as this can lead to a need for fewer
scheduled visits thus reduce costs. The client frequently benefits from a
situation where a clear working understanding has been achieved between the
boat builder and the surveyor at an early stage. However instructions have
been accepted to supervise the building of a craft after its construction
has begun and on occasions to successfully resolve disputes and differences
between boat builders and boat buyers.
Clients
have frequently benefited from the ability to explore with unbiased view,
the many aspects of their boat the materials and equipment specification,
layout options and unique design characteristics. In turn, the boatbuilders
often receive the customer’s suggestions more positively when it is clear
that it has been fully explored before being suggested.
There
is a requirement for new craft to comply with a perplexing panacea of
legislation and build standards which include Marine Coastguard Agency (MCA)
[Link
to MCA] coding regulations, to the Recreational Craft Directive [Link to
RCD] 94/25/EC and 2003/44/EC and The Boat Safety Scheme [Link
to BSS]
Some new vessels require the
involvement of a Notified Body as part of their assessment and we have
provided this contact to varying levels depending upon the needs of various
clients.
